The Rouge Valley Church Sword Hiding Society is a Bible memorizing club. Psalm 119: 9-11 reveals that a person can keep their way pure by "hiding God's Word in our hearts." Hebrews teaches that God's Word is a sword that that is "living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitude of the heart." Ephesians 6:17 states that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God." Hence the name of the group.
Each person chooses a verse or passage that is personally meaningful to their life situation. Each person recites their passage in front of the church during the service. The dedication and consistency among the members is rather astonishing and inspiring. The church is continually encouraged, affirmed and convicted.
The Sword Hiding Society was established with the knowledge that hiding God's Word was crucial to enduring and beating back temptation and sin. When a person is ambushed by Satan, they must immediately bring up God's Word to fight Satan's cunningness. Satan is like a lion prowling to devour those that are unarmed and unassuming. The Holy Spirit prompts the appropriate verses that are memorized during the circumstances of our lives. We often ask about God's Will not realizing that He speaks constantly through His Word. But if we are not intimate with His Word we cannot blame God for the lack of clarity that we have. Memorizing God's Word is hard grunt work and we cannot do without it if we are to resist temptation. There are no shortcuts.
